It's been a damn long time, and I apologize to my two readers. If you're still out there, that is.
What has happened since I last wrote?
Well, three deaths in the past week that deeply saddened me: Julia Child, Elmer Bernstein, and Charlie Waller of The Country Gentlemen. R.I.P. to three wonderful people, all of whom provided fond memories through childhood and even past it. It's funny, though, that my fondest memory of Julia Child is Dan Aykroyd's portrayal of her cutting off her thumb.
Of course, Elmer Bernstein crafted two of the greatest film themes ever: The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape. In the last years of his life he was assisting in TCM's project to provide scores for short silent films by getting film music students to compose them. It was an amazing project, and it's a great inspiration that a man in his twilight years was passing on his great wealth of knowledge to future film composers.
Charlie Waller was the founder and last surviving original member of the bluegrass revival band The Country Gentlemen. In the fifties, he and a bunch of his friends spearheaded the bluegrass revival which has been going on ever since.
I also got over my yearly bout with sinusitis. You bastard!
I've been playing the dynamically silly MMORPG City of Heroes. My goal with each hero character I have is a punning name, which is difficult with the character limit on names. But I've done okay: Darth Mollusk, Marginal Faro, Hiro Worship, and a few others.
What really irked me this past week is that someone stole my new flagpole and Scottish flag off of the front of my house. This happened between 6:45 pm Tuesday and 7:00 am Wednesday, because the flag was there when I got home from work, and it was gone when I left for work, and I did not leave the house between that time. I'm sufficiently irate that I will not be replacing my flagpole or flag until I leave Hattiesburg for good in the next year, and that I will electrify my next flagpole. I will of course have a clearly visible warning that the pole is electrified. While I would not risk my life to stop the theft of my property, I will gladly risk someone else's life in the defense of my property. This may be irresponsible, but I don't care.
The theft was likely a prank staged by a doped-up hippie collegian from the University of Slackers and Malingerers (AKA University of Southern Mississippi). That's not an excuse, just an explanation. If I ever find out who did it, I will engage them in some violently corrective education about property rights, to ensure that they will never be so lax in their appreciation of private property again. I have never understood even the pettiest vandalism, and can remember afternoons after school being spent in scrubbing clean desks that had been written on in class.
My new car (2000 Honda Accord EX V-6) is driving beautifully. I've put over 9k miles on it since June 30, 2004, when I bought it. It screams in the mid-range, and is unequaled in passing other cars.
And that's my update on my life. Soon, I will be posting some thoughts about Iraq, free speech, and Mississippi politics. Thanks for checking my pulse, gentle reader.
