A nice young lady from Senator Cochran's office named Michelle called me yesterday to say that Senator Cochran agreed that Senator Reid was not being fair to Justice Thomas, and that he had made unfounded statements about Justice Thomas's record.
She then went on to inform me that Senator Reid had the right to free speech, so there was nothing Senator Cochran could do.
Let me be absolutely clear: there are many things that Senator Cochran could do concerning Senator Reid's maligning and mendacious statements about Justice Thomas. He could, relying upon the analysis performed by Professor Volokh, make it a matter of public record that Senator Reid lied about Justice Thomas, and about his motives for disliking Justice Thomas.
It's apparent that this won't happen, and I didn't expect it to happen.
My experience does prove, however, that even well-aged Senators from Mississippi have their staff respond to emails, and that you don't have to write a letter in longhand to get some attention from elected representatives.
